Report warns refugee women on the move in Europe are at risk of sexual and gender-based violence

…The report also highlights some key recommendations for governments and EU agencies:
:: Establish a coordinated response system within and across borders that protects women and girls;
:: Acknowledge the protection risks and put personnel and procedures in place specifically to prevent, identify, and respond to sexual and gender-based violence;
:: Ensure response to sexual and gender-based violence that recognizes women will not stop to report SGBV or access services; and
:: Provide legal pathways to protection, especially for women, children and sexual and gender-based violence survivors, including effective family reunification and prioritization of these refugees with specific needs in relocation and resettlement opportunities.

El Niño lowers early production outlook in Southern Africa
Crop and livestock production prospects in Southern Africa have been weakened by the El Niño weather phenomenon that has depressed rains and increased temperatures. A reduced agricultural output would build on last year’s disappointing season, which has already contributed to higher food prices and “could acutely impact the food security situation in 2016,” according to a special GIEWS alert.

Resurgence in global wood production
In 2014, growth in wood products, including industrial roundwood, sawnwood, wood-based panels and pulp and paper, ranged from 1 to 5 percent, surpassing the pre-recession levels of 2007, according to new data published by FAO today. WMO Renews Call for New Images for International Cloud Atlas
The World Meteorological Organization is issuing another call for the submission of high quality photographs of clouds to feature as “reference images” in the next edition of the International Cloud Atlas.
The aim is to produce a user-friendly, digital-based product, which is an authoritative, comprehensive and up-to-date source of reference and is also interesting and accessible to a wide audience. It will also include new types of cloud.

Jason-3 satellite to monitor oceans
The Jason-3 satellite was launched Sunday evening, 17 January, from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, United States of America. Jason-3 will continue the time series of mean sea-level measurements that started in 1992 with the launch of the Topex-Poseidon satellite and continued with Jason-1 and -2.

The satellite’s measurements of ocean waves and ocean surface topography will provide essential input to numerical forecasts of sea state and ocean currents and to other applications in the areas of marine meteorology and operational oceanography. Measurements will also be used in numerical prediction models that couple the atmosphere and the oceans and are used for seasonal forecasting.

Risk management guide for small and medium enterprises launched
VIENNA, 22 January 2016 – The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the International Trade Centre (ITC) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) launched a handbook to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) better manage potential risks.

SMEs are considered a fundamental part of the global economy, however, setting them up and keeping them afloat is no easy task as usually only half of them remain in successful operation after five years.

Finding customers, having access to finance and getting adequate employees for the job are all challenges facing most entrepreneurs. Therefore, the early identification and the effective management of such risks could help improve the performance of SMEs and assure their sustainability.

The new publication, titled “ISO 31000 – Risk management” aims at helping SMEs improve the identification of opportunities and threats, and effectively allocate resources for risk treatment…

International chamber of commerce and UNCTAD pledge to work together on 2030 development agenda

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and UNCTAD have pledged to strengthen their work maximizing the benefits of international trade and investment for economic and social development, and laid out plans for new collaborative efforts to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015.

UNCTAD Secretary-General Mukhisa Kituyi and ICC Secretary General John Danilovich issued a joint statement when they met at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, taking place in Davos, Switzerland, 20–23 January, 2016.

“Both UNCTAD and ICC are strongly committed to implementing the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and can collaborate in a number of important areas such as trade facilitation, e-commerce, investment and competition law,” Dr. Kituyi said. “The private sector will play a significant role in fulfilling the implementation of the SDGs and we are very pleased to partner with ICC, being the largest representative business organization in the world.”…
