New York, July 13, 2015 – The International Rescue Committee (IRC), a leading crisis-focused humanitarian relief and resettlement organization, is deploying a team to the Greek island of Lesbos to provide refugees there with urgently needed access to water and sanitation. The organization is also calling on European countries to support refugee relief efforts.

The 1,000 refugees arriving on the shores of Lesbos daily – sixty percent of whom are fleeing the Syrian crisis – have often had to walk approximately 40 miles to the nearest “transit” camp. However, neither the camp, nor communities along the route, have adequate water or sanitation facilities to accommodate the refugees. As a result, public health risks are high, most notably in Kara Tepe Camp where many toilets are inoperable…
