Petteri Taalas appointed Secretary-General of World Meteorological Organization

GENEVA 4 June 2015 (WMO) – Petteri Taalas, Director-General of the Finnish Meteorological Institute, has been appointed as the next Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization for a four-year mandate starting 1 January 2016. He succeeds Michel Jarraud (France)…
… “The importance of WMO and the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services is growing due to higher number of disasters hitting all parts of the world,” said Mr Taalas. “Proper early warning services are essential in protecting human life and property. Scientific know-how for climate adaptation and water resource management are also crucially needed in several WMO Member countries. I am highly motivated to work for an effective and service oriented WMO.”
Development Partners Launch Climate and Disaster Resilience Initiative for Sub-Saharan Africa

The World Meteorological Organization, African Development Bank and World Bank Group today launched an initiative to support the modernization and strengthening of Sub-Saharan African meteorological and hydrological services. These services are key to strengthening resilience to extreme weather events and enabling economic development.
Entitled, ‘Strengthening Climate and Disaster Resilience in Sub-Saharan Africa’, this initiative is a direct response to the anticipated adverse impacts from climate change, including food insecurity, which pose severe risks to growth and development across the region.
Climate Services for the Andes

The first phase of the project CLIMANDES (Servicios climáticos con énfasis en los Andes en apoyo a las decisiones), aiming to improve climate services in Peru has, been successfully completed, highlighting the potential to bring substantial socio-economic benefits and increase resilience to climate variability and climate change.
In addition to improving climate services, the project also envisages the formation and training of students and professionals in meteorology and climatology.
